계급, 젠더와 대학생 사교육

Abstract

이 논문은 대학생 사교육이 부모의 계급과 자녀의 젠더와 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있다는 점을 경험적으로 분석한다. 오늘날 한국의 사교육은 초중고에서 대학으로까지 확대되었다. 스펙 쌓기라고도 불리는 대학생 사교육은 취업에 도움이 되는 자격이나 능력을 갖추기 위한 목적으로 이루어지며, 대학생 교육비 증가의 한 원인이 되고 있다. 그러나 이러한 현상은 모든 대학생들에게서 나타나는 것은 아니며, 경제적인 능력과 자녀 교육에 대한 높은 관심과 정보를 갖고 있는 중간계급과 자본가 계급에서 가장 활발하게 나타나며, 성별로는 쁘띠부르주아지 여학생들이 남학생들보다 더 적극적이어서 계급-젠더 연계(class-gender nexus) 현상도 나타나고 있다. 또한 대학생 사교육에 미치는 부모 계급의 효과는 대학유형을 매개로 나타나고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 그 결과, 이미 취업에서 유리한 위치를 점하고 있는 수도권 4년제 대학생들이 보다 더 유리한 취업 조건을 갖추기 위한 전략으로 사교육을 더 많이 이용하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

This paper explores shadow education among college students and college graduates, born between 1976 and 1986 in South Korea. While shadow education is common among middle and hight school students for the university entrance exam, now it becomes common even among college students due to the fierce competition in the job market. Shadow education among college students is more visible among students from the capitalist class and the middle class with sufficient economic resources, higher interests in education and information about shadow education. However, according to different types of shadow education, effects on father's class on shadow education among college students significantly vary. We also observe class-gender nexus on shadow education, revealing differential involvement in shadow education between men and women in petty bourgeoisie. A type of college, which was not our main concern, significantly affects the likelihood of shadow education among college students, mediating father's class and education on shadow education.
