구미호의 이중적 관념과 고전서사 수용양상

Abstract

본고는 고전서사의 구미호를 긍정적 구미호, 부정적 구미호로 이분화하고, 단선적 변모과정으로 보는 기존 연구의 반성에서 출발하였다. 이를 위하여 구미호의 기원과 형성, 초월성의 분화에 따른 신성과 마성의 혼재 양상을 살펴보았다. 구미호의 다양한 성격과 복잡한 층위를 해석하기 위해서 신성과 마성이 뒤섞이면서 이행하고, 신성에서 마성으로 이행하는 과정에 신성의 흔적이 남는 것을 주목하였다. 본고에서는 여우신앙이 인류 초기 애미니즘 시기에 존재했지만 이후 초월성이 분화되는 과정에서 구미호에게 신성과 마성이 공존하면서 혼재되는 단계가 있었음을 추론하였다. 구미호의 신성은 신흥종교와 이데올로기가 등장하면서 타협하기도 하지만 점진적으로 약화되고 결국에는 배척된다. 이러한 토착신앙과 신흥종교(혹은 이데올로기)의 타협과 대립 과정은 <원광서학(圓光西學)>과 <서구암 전설>에 나타난다. <원광서학(圓光西學)>에서는 토착신앙과 타협하여 불교와 습합하려는 방식과 배격하려는 방식이 나타난다. <서구암 전설>에는 토착신앙이 유교에 의해 패배하여 구미호의 신성이 유교 질서에 의해 배척된다. 구미호의 신성은 마성과 혼재되어 작품에 수용되기도 한다. <강감찬 출생 설화>에서는 위대한 인물을 출산하는 구미호와 인간을 해치는 구미호가 등장하여 구미호의 신성과 마성 두 관념이 모두 나타난다. 그리고 <여우구슬>, <전우치전>에서는 구미호의 신성이 표면에 드러나지 않고 구미호의 초월적 능력에 흔적을 남긴다. 구미호의 신성을 요괴로 치부하는 사회라도 인간은 자신의 존재를 확장하고자 하는 욕망을 위해 구미호의 신성과 환상을 결합하여 변형하는 것이다.

This study made a start with reflecting on the previous studies that dichotomized nine-tailed foxes into positive and negative ones in classical narratives and viewed them as a unilinear transformation process. The study examined the mixed patterns of holiness and devilishness according to the origin, formation, and transcendence ramification of the nine-tailed fox, focusing on the remaining traces of holiness in the transitional process from holiness to devilishness after the two were mixed and implemented in order to interpret its diverse personalities and complex hierarchies. The study estimated that the fox faith existed during the animism period in the early days of mankind and that there was the coexistence and mixture of holiness and devilishness in the nine-tailed fox in the ramification process of transcendence later. The holiness of the nine-tailed fox was compromised after the advent of new religions and ideologies, and it was eventually excluded after a period of gradual weakening. The compromise and confrontation process between the native faith and new religions(or ideologies) is found in <Wongwangseohak> and the <legend of Seoguam>. While the former shows the ways it tried to combine with and reject Buddhism by compromising with the native faith, the latter demonstrates that the holiness of the nine-tailed fox was excluded by the Confucian order after the native faith was defeated by Confucianism. The holiness of the nine-tailed fox was mixed with its devilishness and accepted in works. In <the birth myth of Gang Gam-Chan>, both the holiness and devilishness of the nine-tailed fox were demonstrated by a nine-tailed fox that gave birth to a great figure and another one that harmed people. In <The Fox Beads> and <Jeonwoochijeon>, the holiness of the nine-tailed fox did not surface and left its traces in its transcendent abilities. Even in the society that regards the holiness of the nine-tailed fox as a monster, people combine their fantasy with its holiness and transform it to satisfy their desire to expand their being.
