Abstract

The views of commentators on when Du Fu (杜甫)'s Youganwushou (「有感五首」) was written are varied. If analyzed, these views can be summarized largely into two schools of thought. One view states that the Youganwushou is a conglomeration of poems all written from different time periods, while the other categorizes Youganwushou as a type of serial poetry that was written around the same era. In the case of the former view, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact time period in which Youganwushou was completed; it is generally believed that the author wrote down his deep emotions concerning individual matters that he had seen or heard within a two-year time frame beginning from the first year of Gwangde (廣德), thus deeming the need to find a mutual connection between each of the poems unnecessary. Concerning the latter view, which requires identifying a specific time when it was written, it is crucial to understand the inner components of the writing technique which can tie the entire poem together. Therefore, determining the written date of the poem becomes a matter of understanding the poem itself. This paper analyzes Youganwushou to discover that Youganwushou strictly observes inner components of Du Fu's writing style similar to those found in other works of his serial poetry, thereby clearly confirming the written purpose of the poem, as well as dating the written time period to fall of the first year of Gwangde (廣德).
