두 문화 사이의 글쓰기 교육 - 과학글쓰기 교재 분석을 중심으로 -

Abstract

교양교육으로서의 글쓰기 이론이 다양화되면서 각각의 이론들은 가치와 실용이라는 두 축 사이에서 배타적으로 공존하고 있다. 특히 과학글쓰기에서 이러한 양상이 두드러지는데, 가치와 실용의 문제는 문학과 과학이라는 낡은 문화갈등의 양상으로 전이되어 나타난다. 과학글쓰기가 인문학과의 배타적인 측면을 강조하여 자기 영역을 특화시키고 있기 때문이다. 그런데 과학글쓰기 교재들을 보면 배타적으로 경계를 설정하고 있음에도 불구하고 그 내부에서는 경계 해체의 징후들이 포착된다. 표준과 매뉴얼로 대표되는 과학글쓰기의 방법을 넘어 글쓰기 일반의 관점이나, 설득이라는 수사학적 관점, 그리고 더 나아가 의사소통 일반에 관련된 관점이 혼재되어 있다. 과학글쓰기 교재가 보여주는 이러한 비균질적 시선은 두 문화 간의 이분법이 해체되는 시대 의식에서 필연적으로 나타나는 현상이다. 또한 이 해체의 징후는 차후의 글쓰기 이론이 나가야할 방향을 보여주기도 한다. 다양화되는 글쓰기 이론이 배타적 공존을 넘어서기 위해서는 공통의 기반이 필요하다. 이것은 객관성 같은 용어의 개념 설정 문제에서도 이루어질 수 있고, 설득이라는 수사학적 관점에서도 시도될 수 있으며, 의사소통 전반과 관련된 사회적 맥락에서도 설정될 수 있다.

A writing theory needs to reflect the aspect of the value of liberal art and the practical demands of realistic use together. Therefore, there is a tendency that theories are increasingly diversified while each of the theories co-exists exclusively without communicating with each other. In particular, the exclusivity in the area of science writing appears as the old cultural conflicts of ‘literature' and ‘science'. Science writing intends to secure its own domain by setting its domain that is different from literature. Accordingly, the conflicts occurred due to the value and fact, subjectivity and objectivity and intuition and inductive discovery are highlighted on the front. However, ‘literature' and ‘science' are the problems of the ‘kinds' not ‘degrees, and the common language channel where the two areas can communicate with each other is rather needed. In fact, the characteristics beyond these exclusive boundaries appear on the other side. In particular, the issues of persuasion or communication could be found to be presented as the important virtue in science writing. Science writing presents the problem of the exclusivity of the theory while presenting the possibility of creating the common area beyond this boundary as well at the same time.
