시적 과학과 융합 교육 ― 21세기 교양교육의 방향성에 대한 탐구

Abstract

현대 과학은 자연에 대한 거시적이고 미시적인 시야들을 열어주고 있다. 이 를 바탕으로 인간과 자연이 다시 연결되며, 물질과 생명에 대한 새로운 감각, 그리고 자연 전체에 대한 감수성이 새롭게 요구되고 있다. ‘융합’은 이러한 문명사의 흐름에서 대두된 개념이며, 융합 교양교육은 과학 과 인문학이 자연에 대한 동일한 질문을 던지고 있다는 데서 출발할 수 있다. 자연에 질문을 품는다는 것은 자연에 대해 시적 감수성을 느낀다는 것이다. 시적 감수성은 인간이 자연과 마주하여 느끼는 감정과 태도, 그리고 행동을 통 합적으로 지칭하는 개념이다. 이 논문에서는 시적 감수성의 영역을 ‘경이’, ‘너 머’, ‘관계’의 세 가지로 범주화하고, 시적 감수성이 과학적 탐구와 인문학적 탐 구의 두 영역에서 공유되고 있었음을 고찰했다. ‘경이’에 대한 감수성은 자연의 아름다움을 발견하고 그 안에서 자신이 존재 를 확인하는 상상과 행동으로 나아갔다. ‘경이’에 대한 감수성은 카오스를 건너 는 질서를, 그 질서에 균열을 내는 새로운 카오스를 탐구하게 하는 원천이다. ‘너머’에 대한 감수성은 상상하는 힘을 가진 인간이 생태적 니치 너머로 자 신을 확장하며 모험을 감행하게 한다. ‘너머’에 대한 감수성은 새로운 시공간을 지향하며, 오감의 제약에서 벗어나 새로운 영역을 상상하고 경험하게 한다. ‘관계’에 대한 감수성은 사물의 네트워킹에 민감하며, 상호 의존하는 정서를 의미한다. ‘관계’에 대한 감수성은 생물학적 본성과 깊이 연관되어 있다. 관계 에 대한 감수성은 사회에서의 호혜적 관계나, 타자에 대한 윤리적 책임감으로 확장될 수 있다. ‘시적 과학’은 시적 감수성을 바탕으로 자연과 인간을 이해하되, 과학이 열어 준 실제 세계에 대한 지식을 삶의 가치로 유연하게 전환시켜 나가는 새로운 지 적-정서적 토대를 지칭한다. 시적 과학이라는 근원적인 토대가 확보될 때, 과학 적 세계관과 인문학적 사유는 서로 소통하고 협업하며, 공통의 언어를 만들어 나갈 수 있다. 21세기 교양교육은 시적 과학이라는 토대 위에서, 빅 히스토리 시대에 대응할 수 있는 유연하고도 균형 있는 시민을 육성할 수 있다.

“Convergence” is the key objective of general education in the twenty-first century. It begins by identifying the fundamental foundation shared by liberal arts and science, as based on the mutual questions: “Where do we come from?” “What are we?” and “Where are we going?” When someone poses a question about nature, it suggests that one can develop a poetic sensibility toward it. Poetic sensibility is a concept that incorporates humans’ emotions, attitudes, and actions in the face of nature. This paper categorizes poetic sensibilities into “wonder,” “the beyond,” and “relationships,” and considers that poetic sensibility has been shared across science and liberal arts. Poetic sensibility toward “wonder” leads to imaginings and actions in which one discovers nature’s beauty and affirms one’s identity within it. Wonder is the source that enables us to investigate the order that crosses over chaos , as well as the new chaos that forms schisms within that order. Poetic sensibility toward “the beyond” endows humans with imaginations capable of pushing past the limits of ecological niches and to embark on adventures. This entails the pursuit of new types of time and space that allow humans to imagine and experience groundbreaking domains, freed from the restraints of the five senses. Poetic sensibility toward “relationships” refers to interdependent sentiments that are sensitive to the networking of things. It is closely related to biological instinct and can be developed into reciprocal relationships in society and ethical responsibility for others. “Poetic science” refers to a new intellectual and affective basis that allows us to understand nature and humans based on poetic sensibility, while flexibly turning scientific knowledge about the real world into real life values. With poetic science’s solid foundation, scientific worldviews and humanistic thought can be conjoined, thus creating a common language. General education in the twentyfirst century will be able to cultivate well-balanced citizens who can flexibly cope in the era of big history, based on the foundation of poetic science.
