미국 거주 한인 청소년의 문화적응과 발달과업 수행에 영향을 주는 근접 과정에 관한 연구: 브론펜브레너의 과정-개인-맥락-시간 모델을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 이민 청소년들이 새로운 생태체계와 어떻게 상호작용하면서 문화적응과 발달과업을 수행해 가는지를이해하고자 하였다. 브론펜브레너의 과정-개인-맥락-시간 모델을 토대로, 이민 청소년들이 근접 환경에 있는 타인및 상징과 어떻게 상호작용하는지를 살펴보고, 근접 과정에 영향을 주는 개인, 맥락, 시간 요소를 파악하여, 문화적응과발달과업 수행에 도움이 되는 상호작용 방식을 귀납적으로 도출하고자 하였다. 미국 내 한인 청소년 12명을 심층인터뷰한 결과, 이민 청소년들의 근접 과정에 관련된 상호작용 대상은 부모, 호스트 가정 보호자, 한국교회 또래친구, 현지학교 또래 친구, 교사, 미디어, 모국 친구들이었고, 이들과의 상호작용 방식은 개인의 동기와 성향, 가정및 학교의 특성, 시간적 요소에 영향을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 나아가, 상호작용 대상별로 문화적응과 발달과업성취에 도움이 되는 상호작용 방식을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 토대로 이민 청소년의 문화적응과 발달과업 수행을지원할 수 있는 상호작용 방식의 특징들을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study was to understand how immigrant adolescents are interacting their environments and achieve cultural adaptation and developmental tasks. Based on Bronfenbrenner’s process-person-context-time model, this study examined how immigrant adolescents interacted others and media within proximal environments, how personal, contextual and time factors influenced their interaction processes, and what characteristics of interaction patterns contributed to cultural adaptation and developmental task achievement. Twelve Korean immigrant adolescents in the US were interviewed. They were interacting parents, homestay guardians, peers in a Korean church, peers in a school, teachers, media, and friends in Korea. Personal characteristics such as orientation toward conflicts and motivation to social relationships, contextual factors such as homestay and school climates, and temporal phase of acculturation influenced their interactions. The interaction patterns related to adaptation and developmental task performance were identified. The findings suggested the characteristics of social interaction processes, personal characteristics, and contextual factors contributing to cultural adaptation and developmental tasks achievement.
