국제결혼과 혼혈의 탄생 －최정희의 <끝없는 浪漫>을 중심으로－

Abstract

국경을 초월한 진정한 사랑 또는 국제적인 로맨스로 인식되었던 국제결혼은 자녀의 출생과 더불어 새로운 국면을 맞게 된다. 혼혈 자녀의 탄생으로 인해 국제결혼 담론은 개인 간의 사랑에서 민족의 문제－혈통의 문제－로 초점이 이동하게 되었고, 이로 인해 극심한 분열현상을 드러낸다. 여기에는 국제결혼을 순결한 사랑으로 의미화 하고 싶어 하는 욕망과 혼혈－피의 뒤섞임－에 대한 공포가 숨어있다. 국제결혼에 대한 이와 같은 공포는 8.15해방과 미군의 진주, 그리고 한국전쟁으로 이어지는 일련의 과정에서 태어난 혼혈아의 존재로 인해 더욱 증폭되었다. 필자는 1950년대 혼혈담론이 국제결혼담론에 미친 영향을 최정희의 장편소설 <끝없는 浪漫>(1958)과 당시 신문기사들을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 그 결과 1950년대 혼혈담론은 크게 ①점령자의 성, ②미국을 숭배하는 여성들의 허영의 씨앗, ③우생학적 열등인자 등으로 부정적으로 의미화 되고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 혼혈에 대한 부정적 담론으로 인해 ‘낭만적 사랑’이라는 국제결혼을 상징화했던 담론은 점차 그 의미를 잃어가게 되었다.

The international marriage had been accepted as the true love across the border or international romance, however, is faced with the new issue with the birth of the child. The birth of the mixed－bloods moves the focus from the love between individuals to the issue of race and lineage in the discourse on international marriage, often resulting in extreme conflict which takes place between the desire to sublimate international marriage into pure love and the fear from mixing bloods. The existence of mixed－bloods who were born through a series of events such as the national liberation of Korea followed by the stationing of US Army and the Korean War added more chaos to the discourse on international marriage. This study examines the impact of the discourse on mixed－bloods in the 1950's upon the discourse on international marriage through Jung－Hi Choi’s full－length novel, Endless Romance(1958) and the newspaper articles at the time. The discourse on mixed－bloods produced negative ideas generally summarized into ① Occupier’s Name, ② Seed of Vanity of Women Worshipping the USA, and ③ Eugenically Inferior Gene. The international marriage used to symbolize romantic love, but it no longer has the foothold and is disappearing due to mixed－bloods.
