- Abstract
- It has traditionally been presumed that economic growth reduces poverty mainly through trickling- down effect. However, it also has a deleterious effect on the level of inequality in a society. This study aims to analyze a correlation between economic growth and social equity and its congruency on local level. The results mainly show that the negative correlation between regional economic growth and social equity on last ten years is existed. It also indicates that there is high congruence between the levels of regional economic growth and social equity, indicating that ranks of comparative level of the local governments are significantly solid during 2000-2009. Three policy directions are suggested to enhance the positive relationship between economic growth and social equity. First, it is necessary to set up the social equity-oriented urban policy for enhancing residents' quality of life and sustainable urban development. Second, during last decade, social equity in Seoul has not been improved although the regional economic growth is upward. This indicates that social cohesion to improve the social equity is strongly required. Third, this study found that the growth pattern of social equity has not been changed in a short period of time as well as regional economic growth, so that the strategy of regional level urban development should be considered as a long term option.
