청소년기 물질주의와 대인관계의 질, 성인기 행복의 장기적 관계

Abstract

물질주의자들은 행복 수준이 낮으며, 그 한 가지 이유는 이들의 대인관계가 부적응적이기 때문인 것으로 알려져 있다(Deci & Ryan, 2000; Kasser, 2002; Solberg, Diener, & Robinson, 2004). 이러한 선행연구자들의 견해에 근거하여, 본 연구는 청소년기 물질주의와 대인관계의 질, 그리고 성인기 행복과 장기적 관계를 검토했다. 이를 위해서 한국교육고용패널(KEEP: Korean Education and Employment Panel) 고3 코호트 자료를 분석했다. 이 자료는 전국의 고등학교 3학년생 4,000명(남자 2,222명, 여자 1,778명)을 1년 주기로 추적 조사한 자료이다. 고등학교 3학년 시기의 물질주의와 4년 후 대인관계의 질, 그리고 10년 후 행복의 관계에 대한 구조방정식 모형 검증을 실시한 결과, 고3 시기에 물질을 추구하는 청소년들은 대인관계의 질이 낮고 성인기에 행복하지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 대인관계의 질은 성인기 행복과 부적인 관계를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 청소년기 물질주의가 장기적으로 성인기의 심리사회적 부적응과 관련이 있을 가능성이 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구의 결과에 근거한 논의와 함께 청소년들의 올바른 가치관 형성을 위한 사회적 노력의 방안에 대해 제언했다.

This study examined the long-term relationship among adolescents’ materialism, interpersonal relations, and adulthood happiness. For this purposes, the author analyzed data from Korean Education and Employment Panel (high school seniors’ cohort) yearly tracing a total of 4,000 high school third graders (2,222 males and 1,778 females) for over ten years. The results of the structural equation modeling for the relation among materialism, quality of interpersonal relationship and happiness are as follows. Firstly, adolescents’ materialism negatively related to the quality of interpersonal relationship 4 years later and happiness 10 years later. Secondly, people with low quality of interpersonal relationship showed low level of happiness after 6 years. These results suggest that adolescents’ materialism has a long-term negative relation to adulthood psychosocial adaptation.
