Growth factors can be stabilized by immobilization with carbohydrates from thermal and proteolytic degradations. In thisstudy, we prepared chitosan oligomer which is suitable to immobilize growth factors and performed their cytocompatibility test.Chitosan oligomer is successfully prepared by the nitrous acid depolymerisation method and fractionated to each fraction havingdifferent molecular weights by the methanol precipitation method(Fraction A,B,C,D). The chemical structure of preparedchitosan oligomer is identified by IR and 1H-NMR analysis and the molecular weights of each fraction were determined by GPCanalysis. From the IR and 1H-NMR analysis, we identified that chitosan oligomer has the fundamental structure of chitosanpolymer after the nitrous acid depolymerisation. From the GPC analysis, the weight-average molecular weights of Fraction A, B,C, and D were determined as 8,400, 4,400, 3,200 and 1,200, respectively. By the results of cytocompatibility test, fraction Ashowed the higher survival ratio of NHDF cell line than other fractions and in lower concentration than 1 mg/mL, no toxicitieswere showed. In the result, it was considered that chitosan oligomer fraction A is suitable to immobilize growth factors.-
