Abstract

In discourse analysis, the choice of full NPs and pronominal expressions has been one of the most widely discussed topics. However, little research has been carried out on the use of personal proper nouns (PPNs), simply being treated as a type of full NPs. This research investigates the question of what forms PPNs take when they are first introduced and tracked in the following discourse through an analysis of PPNs in Acts of the New Testament. It also investigates the question of what forms PPNs take when different persons with same names are introduced into and tracked in discourse. Examination of the written discourse shows that PPNs with modifiers take the following forms: (i) names with family relations, (ii) names with places of origin or birth, (iii) names with social positions or titles, (iv) names with other characteristic expressions. Examination also shows that pronouns are used with relatively low frequency in the second-mention of the referents, but PPNs tend to continue to be used because of their high identifiability and definiteness. The research also shows that the choice of PPNs is related to the following factors: high identifiability, iconicity, politeness, and avoid-ambiguity strategies. Finally, this research shows that examination of the use of PPNs in discourse can provide a better way of understanding communicative strategies in discourse.
