한국관련 정보그림책에 묘사된 한국문화의 진정성에 관한 연구: 미국 내 출판된 정보그림책을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 미국에서 출판된 한국문화 관련 정보그림책의 문화적 진정성을 조사하는데 있다. 연구 목적을 위해 10권의 정보그림책에서 제공하는 글과 그림을 통해 제공된 정보가 사실에 근거하여 정확한지, 최신 자료를 바탕으로 작성되어 있는지, 그리고 한국문화에 대한 고정관념, 편견이 포함되어 있는지를 조사하였다. 조사결과 한국인의 생활방식(음식, 옷, 명절), 한국의 지리·자연(지도), 한국 역사 관련 정보에서 오류가 있는 것으로 확인되었고 한국의 역사와 경제 관련 정보의 경우 최근 한국의 역사와 경제발전에 대한 정보가 충분히 제공되고 있지 않는 것으로 파악되었다. 또한 전통적 여성상과 한국전쟁과 분단 상황에 대한 강조는 한국에 대한 부정적 이미지 또는 편견을 심어줄 수 있을 것으로 판단되었다. 본 연구는 한국문화 관련 정보그림책의 글과 그림에서 발견되는 오류 개선을 통해 문화적 진정성 증진을 위한 적극적인 노력이 필요함을 시사한다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the cultural authenticity of information picture books for children written in English. The analyses of Korean culture in text and illustrations were based on 10 information picture books published in USA. Specifically, this study examined whether information presented in the books were accurate, based on the latest data, and includes stereotypes and bias towards Korean culture. The results showed that there were errors in the description of Korean lifestyle (food, clothing, holidays), geography, nature (map), and Korean history. In addition, they do not provide up-to-date information about Korean history and economy. Finally, the emphasis of the traditional female image and the Korean War and the division situation may cause young children have a negative image and bias towards Korea. This study suggests that it is necessary to improve the authenticity of Korean culture by publishing more accurate information picture books while correcting the errors found in the information picture books about Korea.
