Abstract
Digital visual effects are used in numerous ways in modern film making and not just to materialize otherwise seemingly impossible presentations. We can visualize a scene to know what it would look like before actually shooting and with the help of digital composition and effects, we can film scenes that would be impossible to shoot in reality. And also, with digital color correction, the director can produce an atmosphere of his liking. But digital visual effects are quite expensive. Especially in Korea where production costs are moderate, there was often a sort of compromise in many ways. A low-cost optimized process and pipelines for digital visual effects would be desirable. So this study tries to propose some methods that would be welcomed by the producers and directors by case studying the production of the film ‘Sunflower’. The study first looks into the definition of digital visual effect and its history. Then it shows how the visual effects team of the ‘Sunflower’ composed their pipelines to produce the desired effects with such low-costs. Major scenes where digital effects were used is analyzed to find out what kind of image the director wanted, and what made the scene impossible to actually shoot in film. After the analysis, this study then shows in detail how and where digital images were used in the scenes to create the preferred image, and presents methods for future possibility and expandability of digital visual effects.
