베네치아의 도시조직과 주거형식의 변천에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 베네치아의 도시조직과 주거형식의 변천과정을 상세히 파악하여보고자 한 것이다. 이 연구는 유형형태학(typo-morphology)의 연구방법을 취한다. 베네치아는 세계에서 그 유래를 찾을 수 없는 완전한 중세도시로서, 운하와 도로들이 이루어내는 미로와 같이 복잡한 공간조직은 우리에게 상당한 관심을 불러일으킨다. 이 연구는 그러한 베네치아를 ‘읽어내는’ 것을 연구주제로 삼았다. 이 연구는 베네치아의 도시구조와 주거형식을 ‘변화’라는 측면에서 살펴보려는 의도도 있지만, 그것보다는 여러 유형의 주택들이 모여서 도시조직을 이루는데 있어서 베네치아에서만 볼 수 있는 독특한 메커니즘을 살펴보려는 것이다. 이것은 근대적 도시계획이 지니는 한계를 이곳을 통해서 재검토해 볼 수 있는 중요한 계기가 될 수 있으리라 생각하기 때문이다. 수십 개의 섬이 모여서 이루어진 베네치아는 매우 독자적인 도시조직을 형성하는 동시에, 그 속에 자리하는 주거형식도 여타 이탈리아의 도시와는 구별되는 독자적인 형식을 취한다. 따라서 매우 제한된 토지 속에 엄청나게 밀도 높은 환경을 이루는 이곳은 우리에게 일련의 교훈과 문제해결의 방식을 알려줄 것으로 기대된다. 이러한 배경을 가지고 시행된 본 연구는 세 가지의 목적을 가진다. 첫째, 베네치아의 도시구조와 가로체계에서 보여지는 특성을 파악한다. 둘째, 베네치아의 주거형식의 특징과 그것의 변천과정을 살펴본다. 셋째, 독특한 도시조직 속에 자리하는 주택들의 존재방식에 대해 파악한다.

Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist (1951) contains Logical Empiricist Philosopher Hans Reichenbach's paper “The Philosophical Significance of the Theory of Relativity” and Einstein's short response to it. In this book, Reichenbach and Einstein argued on the subject of the ‘empirical determinability of physical geometry’, and later Reichenbach reiterated his point of view on Einstein's answer in his The Rise of Scientific Philosophy (1951). Recently Philosopher Marco Giovanelli diagnosed this debate as a “dialogue of the deaf” between Reichenbach, who belongs to the “Helmholtzian tradition,” and Einstein, who belongs to the “Riemannian tradition,” under different mathematical traditions. After reviewing Giovanelli's interpretation, I try to present an alternative interpretation of the ‘Reichenbach-Einstein debate’ in this paper. Reichenbach and Einstein represent two different philosophical perspectives within a single tradition of ‘physicalization’ of the abstract concepts of time and space. Reichenbach took the ‘empiricist’ viewpoint following Helmholtz, Einstein took the 'conventionalist' viewpoint following Poincaré, and the conversation between Reichenbach and Einstein was a ‘true philosophical dialogue’, not a ‘dialogue of the deaf’. My alternative interpretation equates Reichenbach's ‘empirical’ view with Einstein's ‘conventionalist’ view and, unlike Giovanelli’s, treats the Reichenbach-Einstein debate as a ‘true philosophical dialogue’ rather than a ‘dialogue of the deaf.’
