Despite the increasing evidence of spoken language characteristics from conversation study, little has been done to improve English textbook development in conversation. The purpose of this study is to investigate conversational features in secondary school English textbooks in Korea. Three middle school and three high school English textbooks are analysed in different features of conversation: vocabulary and grammar. The results show that the treatment of the selected features varies from patchy to complete absence. It was concluded that English textbooks which aim to foster conversational skills and natural spoken interaction should be based on the authentic features of conversational vocabulary and grammar.-
