dc.description.abstract | This paper analyzes Kincaid's A Small Place by focusing on former English colonialism and racism, neo/post-colonialism and corruption in the present Antiguan government through international tour industry in Antigua. In particular, this paper emphasizes the fact that Antiguans' colonial conditions have continued through the development of an international tour industry in Antigua after Antigua's independence from England. In A Small Place, Kincaid/narrator, as a tour guide, takes ‘you’/the reader on a tour and guides you through several places of Antigua. Kincaid also defines ‘you’ as a potential ‘white tourist’. However, throughout the text, Kincaid expresses her anger to all the potential white tourists by calling them "ugly," "empty," "stupid," "incredibly unattractive, fat and pastrylike- fleshed," "pig" and "a piece of rubbish." In other words, in A Small Place, Kincaid/narrator deconstructs the long-standing paradise myth as the tourist resort by experimenting with the form of the tour narrative and by writing back into anti-tour narrative. Kincaid/narrator, as an anti-tour guide, condemns the neo-colonial conditions that the tour industries Antigua has developed are based on the fact that white tourists have degraded and humiliated Antiguans by using them and their lives as decorative background for their vacation. To do this, Kincaid places herself in the dual perspectives of both the native/insider and the tourist/outsider. | - |
