The genus Salmonella forms a single DNA homology group with seven sub-groups. Comparison of rRNA sequences is fundamental to analysis of phylogenetic relationships between bacterial taxa. But representatives of all of these taxa show very high 16S rRNA similarity values. Therefore, a rapid and accurate procedure is still needed for identification and classification. In this study, we determine the value of a genomic fingerprinting procedure, based on DNA primers which correspond to interspersed and conserved repetitive elements in bacteria, namely, REP (repetitive extragenic palindromic sequence), ERIC (enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence) and BOX elementinvestigated genetic relatedness and evolution according to phylogenetic tree for total 44 strains of Salmonella. As a results, the best defined groups were obtained using combination of REP-PCR, ERIC-PCR, and BOX-PCR. It is evident from the results that REP-PCR was a extremely reliable, reproducible, rapid and highly discriminatory way of clustering between Salmonella species. It is concluded that REP-PCR genomic fingerprinting could be used for the rapid identification and classification of Salmonella species and may useful for epidemiological studies to diagnosis and control of Salmonellosis.-
