dc.description.abstract | This study aims to explore the differences in utilizing textual metadiscourses in the translated Letters to Shareholders (from Korean into English) and their non-translated counterparts (originally written in English). Textual metadiscourse is an umbrella term for various linguistic resources that a writer uses to help his/her readers understand and interpret the text in a way that the writer intends. The analysis of textual metadiscourses in the translations and non-translations showed that relatively more comparison transitions were used in non-translations, while more addition transitions were used in translations. Translations tend to use frame markers to propose strategies or plans for the coming years, while non-translations tend to use them to report the company's performance of the previous year. Code glosses showed a relatively big difference in the two sets of the texts. Non-translations were found to use more of reformulation code glosses than translations, which could be explained in line with different writing practices in the two cultures. In English writing culture, a writer is said to assume responsibility for a success of communication, while in Korean culture, the responsibility is on the part of readers. Such differences in the use of textual metadiscourses could be used to help translation students be sensitive to the different linguistic resources they need to use in translating across cultures. | - |
