Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study the name of places concerned with rocks and the relation between those of Modern Korean and those of Old Korean. The existing researches for ‘Ba-wi’ consider the transitional process of a word form. Also they usually reconstruct ‘Ba-hoe’ as the pre-form of ‘Ba-wi’ and present the word form ‘Ba-hoe’ on Middle Korean as the reasons. However. we do not accept their insistence because of some reason those a guttural sound which is in sounds of Chinese character was not separated from a velar sound in on the Ancient Chinese and ‘Ba-gu, Ba-gi, Bak’ those means a rock are used at regional dialects on Modern Korean. Meanwhile, a name of place can be analyzed in the Front Place Names Morpheme(F.P.N.M) and the Back Place Names Morpheme(B.P.N.M). According to this analysis methods, the name of places concerned with rocks is classed as A model(F.P.N.M+‘Ba-wi’), B model(‘Ba-wi’+B.P.N.M) and C model(F.P.N.M+‘Ba-wi’+B.P.N.M). Commonly, A model means rocks but some A models mean town, valley, mountain and field because there is a specific rock and the rock is represented town, valley, mountain and field. B model means only rocks. The common point between A model and B model is that the regions acquire the name of places concerned with rocks because there are specific rocks and the name of places concerned with rocks are represented not only ‘rocks’ but ‘town, valley, mountain and field, etc.’Also, this appearance is found in Old Korean. This point means that we can decode the name of places concerned with rocks under the loan-word transcription system of Korean in the Ancient Korean.
