인물의 내면소설로서 <만복사저포기>와 <이생규장전>의 독법

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 <만복사저포기>와 <이생규장전>의 인물의 내면의식을 규명하고 그 의미를 논의하여 이 두 작품을 인물의 내면소설로 읽어보는 것이다. <만복사저포기>와 <이생규장전>의 여성 인물의 내면은 여성 인물의 직접적인 말과 시(詩)와 사(詞)로 주로 나타난다. 여성 인물의 내면은 정절과 정념에 대한 갈등, 이 갈등을 넘어서서 애정 욕망을 지향하는 의식으로 가득 차 있고 이것이 여성적 담화로 표현되어 있다. 독자는 애정 욕망이 현실적으로 좌절되고 있지만 억눌린 내면 욕망을 분명한 목소리로 표현되는 것을 읽음으로써 정서적 카타르시스를 경험할 수 있다. 남성 인물의 내면은 서술자의 직접 제시와 공간묘사로 표현되어 있다. 남성 인물의 내면은 의심과 즐거움, 두려움과 기쁨을 반복하는 형태로 드러난다. 이것은 남성 인물의 내면이 현실의 남루한 처지, 인간 존재의 유한성과 이것을 벗어나 환락적 삶을 희구하는 욕망으로 가득 차 있음을 의미한다. 독자는 남성 인물이 느끼는 불안과 초조는 인간의 현실적 삶이 노정하고 있는 그늘지고 어두운 측면에서 기인한다는 것을 깨달을 수 있고 여기서 남성 인물에 대한 연민의 감정을 느낄 수 있다. 이런 의미에서 <만복사저포기>와 <이생규장전>은 인물의 내면을 전경화하여 독자가 인물의 내면을 구체적으로 읽을 수 있고 인물의 정서적, 인식적 차원에 깊이 공감하여 현실의 문제를 되돌아보게 한다는 점에서 내면소설이 될 수 있다.

This paper aims at reading “Manboksajeopogi” and “Isaenggyujangjeon” as inner side oriented novels by discussing the meanings and flows of characters' minds. The inner side of the female characters of “Manboksajeopogi” and “Isaenggyujangjeon” are expressed by their dialogues and poems. Their inner side reveal the conflict between maintaining chastity and pursuing sexual desire, leaning toward the desire. Although their desire is frustrated by the reality, readers may experience catharsis by reading the subdued desire. Male characters' inner side is represented by writers' description about their minds as well as the environment. They are described as repeatedly experiencing suspicion, pleasure, fear and joy. This shows that men are filled with the desire that pursue epicurean lifestyle, beyond their humble status and the limited nature of human lives. Readers may realize that male characters' fear and anxiety are attributable to the inherent misfortune of human lives. Here is where readers can sympathize the male characters. In this regard, both “Manboksajeopogi” and “Isaenggyujangjeon” can be regarded as inner side oriented novels in that they mostly describe the inner side of the characters so that readers can empathize the characters while reflecting on the problems in their real lives.
