월남(月南) 이상재(李商在)의 체육사상과 활동에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 이상재의 체육사상과 활동을 규명하고자 하였다. 이상재는 YMCA의 전인적 인간론과 전인교육사상에 입각하여, 체(體)를 천시하였던 당시의 사회적 폐습을 비판하면서 체(體)를 덕(德)과 지(智)와 같이 동등한 입장으로 인식하였다. 그리고 이상재는 체는 덕과 지를 빛내기 위해서 반드시 갖추어야 할 그릇으로 생각하였고, 교육의 한 영역으로서 덕육, 지육과 함께 체육의 중요성을 강조하였다. 이상재는 YMCA 체육사업을 통하여 청년들의 정신적⋅신체적 능력을 배양함으로써 서구 열강들의 위협에 대항하고, 주권 확보를 위한 기초를 마련하고자 하였다. 특히, 이상재는 해외 동포와의 야구경기라는 스포츠 이벤트를 통하여 해외 민족운동 세력의 자금을 마련하는 한편, 국내 민족운동 세력과의 유대적인 관계를구축하고자 하였다는 점에서 그가 전개하였던 체육 사업들이 민족주의적이었음을 알 수 있다.

This study intended to examine the ideas on sports and activities of Lee Sang-jae. Based on the holistic theory of mankind and holistic education idea of YMCA, Lee Sang-jae criticized evil social practices of the time which despised sports(體) and recognized sports(體) at the same level as virtue(德) and wisdom(智). In addition, Lee Sang-jae regarded sports as a necessary foundation for raising virtue and wisdom, and emphasized the importance of sports along with virtue and wisdom as one pillar of education. Lee Sang-jae tried to resist the threat of western powers and prepare the basis for securing sovereignty by cultivating mental and physical abilities of the youths through YMCA sports programs. Especially, in that Lee Sang-jae tried to raise fund for overseas nationalism activists and establish friendly relationship with nationalism activists at home through sports events like baseball games with overseas Koreans, the sports programs he promoted are deemed to have nationalistic characteristics.
