dc.description.abstract | In recent decades, cognitive linguists have investigated many figurative expressions in terms of Metaphor Theory [MT] (Lakoff and Johnson 1980). MT has shown many conceptual metaphors based on the claim that figurative expressions are derived from the mapping between concepts in the target domains and objects in the source domains. The present research attempts to explore figurative expressions of a sea voyage by investigating them in Korean media discourse. This study examines how the terms for a sea voyage and transportation are used in media discourse. Examination shows that the figurative expressions of a sea voyage are used frequently in describing situations such as politics, ruling a country, leading political parties, managing business/social organizations, etc. Based on this observation, this research shows that the metaphors POLITICS IS A SEA VOYAGE and RULING A COUNTRY IS SAILING are used in representing political activities figuratively. More specifically, the following conceptual metaphors are used for representing political activities in terms of a sea voyage: (i) PRESIDENT/LEADER IS CAPTAIN, (ii) MEMBERS OF AN ORGANIZATION ARE SAILORS, (iii) MANAGEMENT IS SAILING, (iv) DIFFICULTIES IN MANAGEMENT ARE OBSTACLES IN SAILING, etc. Finally, this research claims that figurative expressions in media discourse can be understood properly and explained fruitfully in terms of MT. | - |
