창립기 신간회의 성격 재검토

Abstract

1927년 1월 19일 신간회가 발기하자, 『조선일보』ㆍ『동아일보』ㆍ『중외일보』 등 국내 신문은 신간회가 ‘순(純)민족주의 단체’로서 발기하였음을 강조하였다. 이들 신문은 신간회의 책임자의 말을 인용하여, 신간회의 목표가 “우경적 사상을 배척하고 민족주의 중 좌익전선을 형성”하는 데 있다고 보도하였다. 純민족주의에서 ‘순’은 한 가지 뜻을 첨가하는 관형사가 아니라, 민족주의의 본질속성(essential property)을 나타내는 매우 중요한 개념이었다. 순민족주의는 민족주의를 더욱 강조하였으므로, 이질(異質)의 사회주의ㆍ공산주의와 분리되었다. 나아가 ‘純’은 ‘불순’(不純)과 대립하므로, 순민족주의는 不純한 민족주의를 배격하였다. 요즈음과 전혀 다른 용례였지만, 이때 純은 左翼과도 같은 의미를 지녔다. 純과 左翼은 자치운동처럼 타협주의로 타락해버린, 不純한 성향의 정치세력과 스스로를 구별하려는 강조어였다. 左翼이 純과 같은 의미를 지녔으므로, 순민족주의와 좌익민족주의는 동의어였다. 신간회가 배척한, 타락하고 不純한 ‘우경적 사상’은, 신간회 강령의 세 번째가 지적한 기회주의=타협주의였다. 민족주의 좌익전선은 민족주의자와 사회주의자들의 협동전선이 아니었다. 또한 민족주의자를 모두 포괄하지도 않으며, 민족주의 가운데 좌익으로 구성되는 조직체였다. 민족주의 좌익전선은 민족주의 이념에 입각하여 일제에 저항하고 완전독립을 지향하는 비타협 민족주의 진영을 가리켰다. 이들은 일제를 타도할 적(敵)으로 설정하였고, 사회주의 이념을 일정하게 수용하였고, 자치운동과 같은 타협주의를 배격하였다. 민족주의좌익전선ㆍ민족좌익전선으로서 신간회가 발기할 무렵에는, 조선민흥회가 1926년 7월 발기하여 창립대회를 준비하던 중이었는데, 당시 사회의식이 조선민흥회를 ‘민족적 단일전선’으로 성격규정하였으므로 신간회 주도자들은 신간회의 목적의식을 이와 달리 천명할 필요가 있었다. 1927년 5월 들어 『조선일보』가 신간회를 민족단일당으로 규정하기까지, 신간회는 일관되게 순민족주의를 표방하였다.

When Singanhoe was initiated January 19th in 1927, 『The Chosun Ilbo』ㆍ『DongA Ilbo』ㆍ『The Chungoi Ilbo』 and so on made an emphasis on the promotion that Singanhoe was a pure nationalist party. These newspapers cited the goal of Singanhoe from a representative who took a responsibility to report that Singanhoe would like to form the leftwing front in the middle of nationalism to exclude the rightwing idea. The ‘pure’ in pure nationalism was not just a pre-noun to add a meaning but an important notion to show the essential property of nationalism. The more the pure nationalism put stress on the nationalism, the better it was separated from socialism and communism. In addition, the word pureis contradictory to the ‘impure’ so that pure nationalism disapproved nationalism that was not pure. Of course, it could not be the same usage in these days but this time the pure had a little bit of meaning like leftwing. Like autonomy movement between pure and leftwing that became corrupt to negotiationism, these two words were the languages to distinguish themselves from the political powers that were impure. Because the leftwing meant pure, here pure nationalism and leftwing nationalism had the synonymity. The rightwing idea that was exclusive and impure from which Singanhoe rejected was opportunism which was the same to the negotiationism as the third principle of Singanhoe pointed out. The leftwing-national(ism) front was not the cooperative front from the nationalists and socialists. Also we know that it was the organizer that no nationalists were included just forming its name as leftwing in the middle of nationalism. Leftwing front in nationalism resisted Japanese pressure based on the idea of nationalism which was the camp as an intransigent nationalist that intended to have perfect independence. They established the Japanese as enemy to break and accepted the social idea and denounced negotiationism like the autonomy movement. When 『The Chosun Ilbo』 prescribed Singanhoe as unified one national party in May, 1927, it was true that Singanhoe claimed to be pure nationalism consistently.
