영화 「서부전선 이상 없다」와 「라파예트」의 비교 연구 -두 영화의 차이점과 공통점에 대해-

Abstract

칸토레크 담임 선생님이 학생들이 입대해야 할 소중한 이유들을 열거하고 있는 그 시각에 바우머는 그저 한 마리의 새를 그리는 것에 집중하고 있었다. 새는 어떤 누구의 간섭과 제재를 받지 않고 자유롭게 하늘을 날며 날개가 곤할 때 알맞은 곳을 찾으며 내려와 쉼을 청하는 자유로운 존재다. 이런 새와 같이 자유로운 영혼을 품고 있어야 할 고등학생들이 기계처럼 움직이는 군인들로 만들어진다. 바우머에게 새가 의미하는 바는 자유라는 상징적 의미부여로서 끔찍한 살상이 즐비한 전쟁에서 자유에 대한 갈망이 그에게 크게 자리 잡았다는 것이다. 또한 「라파예트」에서 볼 수 있었던 주요 특성은 대조적인 것으로서, 전쟁에서 인간의 이중적인 모습과 그에 따르는 무자비하고 비인간적인 행위에 대해 규명해 보았다. 대조를 통해 볼 수 있었던 것은 사람들의 이중성과 그런 사람에 의해 사용되는 도구의 이중적인 면모를 생각해 보고 반성해야 한다는 것이다. 더 이상 부끄러운 모습을 반복하지 말아야 하고 더 나아가 사람을 다스리는 과학의 발전이 아니라 사람이 다스릴 수 있고 이용할 수 있는 긍정적인 과학과 기술의 발전을 도모해야 한다는 것이다. 이런 특성을 지닌 두 영화에서 찾아낼 수 있는 공통점과 차이점들을 또한 분석해 보았다. 결국 이 두 영화는 전쟁의 참혹성, 허무함을 스크린을 통해 보여줌으로써 우리에게 말하고자 하는 점이 있었다. ‘전쟁은 일어나서는 안 된다’라는 것이었다.

Birds fly freely without any intervention and sanction and are free from any creature in this world who seek to find a suitable place and come down to rest when their wings are tired. High school students who should have free souls like these birds are becoming machine. Paul Baumer, now made for the war, what the bird means is that it is a symbolic meaning of freedom and a desire for freedom in the war where the terrible deaths have taken place. The main characteristics seen in the movie Lafayette are the contrast, and we have examined the dual forms of human beings in war and the ruthless and inhumane actions that follow. What we have seen through the contrast is that we have to reflect on the duality of people and the dual aspects of the tools used by such people. We should make no longer a shameful repetition, but a further development of positive science and technology that people can use. We should not make the development of science that governs people. I analyzed similarities and differences that can be found in two films with these characteristics. In the end, these two films wanted to tell us by showing the horrors of war through the screen. 'War should not happen'.
