영화 「불안은 영혼을 잠식한다」에 나타난 주인공 에미의 소외된 삶

Abstract

본 논문은 히틀러 시대의 나치즘을 체험한 즉, 그 때에 태어나 당시에 교육을 받았던 여주인공에 중점을 두고 분석했다. 여주인공 에미는 감독 파스빈더가 제시해보이고자 한 전형적인 상황에 처한 전형적인 주인공이 된다. 에미를 전형적으로 보는 것은 그녀에게서 나타나는 사고와 성격의 측면이 곧 독일인의 그것이고, 관객들이 다시 확신하는 예정된 행동이 이미 알고 있는 그런 행동양식과 주인공의 행동양식이 일치하기 때문이다. 에미는 결혼을 통해 자기 자신을 찾아 나서는 긴 여정을 떠난다. 이런 여정을 통해 그녀가 소외될 수밖에 없는 상황과 동기를 얘기하고 있을 뿐 아니라 에미가 가정이라는 울타리 안에서와 타인과의 접촉을 이루는 직장에서 겪는 정신적인 여정 및 당시 독일인들이 지닌 문제점울 드러내 보였다. 에미의 위기는 바로 가정에서부터 시작되었고, 이것은 모로코인 알리와의 결혼을 통해 다시 주변 인물과의 관계에서 더욱 심화되었다. 점차로 그녀를 압박해오는 소외는 마지막으로 이 모든 것의 원인이 이들의 생활을 알게 모르게 위협하고 기만한 순수혈통 중시에 의한 과거 나치시대의 인종차별과 그것에 의한 뿌리 깊은 편견에서 비롯된 것임을 알 수 있게 되었다. 불가항력적인 사회 억압 속에서 존재 의미를 잃은 유약한 에미를 통해 파스빈더는 당시 사회에 편재해있던 부조리와 패배주의, 백인 우월주의가 팽배해질 수밖에 없는 현실을 드러냈다. 그리하여 독일 사람들의 경험세계에 형상을 부여하는 포괄적인 주장이 만들어졌다. 에미는 결국 그 시대를 대변하는 보통의 독일 사람이자, 파시즘, 보다 정확히 말해 히틀러 시대가 야기한 고독한 개인들의 소외의 일면을 드러낸다. 영화에서 에미가 20세 연하의 유색인 노동자와 결합하는 것은 자기 자신을 찾아 나서는 의지와 결단을 드러내 보이는 것이다.
