여성혐오에 대응하는 온라인 커뮤니티의 실천 전략과 장치의 세속화 가능성

Abstract

본 연구는 아감벤의 장치와 세속화 논의에 근거하여, 여성혐오를 비대칭적 젠더 권력관계에 내재된 전략적인 기능을 가지는 장치로 개념화함으로써 여성혐오 장치가 어떻게 여성들의 신체, 감정, 의견, 행동 등을 포획, 규정, 차단하는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 나아가 여성혐오에 대한 저항적 실천을 장치에 의해 포획된 것들을 공통의 사용으로 돌려주는 세속화 과정으로 개념화함으로써, 반 여성혐오 온라인 커뮤니티의 활동이 여성혐오 장치에 의해 포획된 여성성, 언어, 온라인 공간을 복원하는데 어떤 가능성과 한계를 가지는지 분석하고자 하였다. 대표적인 반 여성혐오 커뮤니티인 <메갈리아> 이용자들과 심층인터뷰를 한 결과, 여성혐오 장치는 여성을 대상화하고, 여성성에 대한 프레임을 적용하고, 문제제기 여성을 낙인찍고, 여성을 투명인간 취급하여 배제하는 것으로 작동한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이에 대한 대항으로 메갈리안들은 미러링 전략을 활용하여 여성혐오 발화자의 권위에 도전하고, 여성혐오 발언을 재맥락화하는 놀이를 행하고, 개념녀가 되기를 거부하고 스스로 메갈녀가 되고자 하는 주체화를 경험하고 있었다. 그러나 혐오를 통해 되받아쳐 말하는 방식을 취하고 있는 메갈리안의 발화행위는 권력담론에 재포획될 가능성과 새로운 분리 및 억압의 기제로 환속될 위험성을 내포하고 있었다. 본 연구는 아감벤의 장치의 세속화 논의를 통해, 여성혐오에 대한 저항적 실천의 효과와 한계를점검하고 향후 과제를 논의했다는 데 의의가 있다.

The purpose of this study is to examine how misogyny speech captures, determines and controls women’s gestures, behaviors and opinions, how angered women resist misogyny speech, and what kind of potentials and limitations their tactics have. Based on Agamben’s discussion of an apparatus and profanations, this study applied the concept of apparatus to misogyny speech and the concept of profanations to tactics against misogyny speech. Through in-depth interviews with online users who have participated in the anti-misogyny community called Megalia, this study found that the misogyny apparatus had determined and controlled women’s gestures, behaviors, opinions, and emotions by sexually objectifying women, framing women with stereotyped and ideal prototypes, sigmatizing all the women who raise an issue of misogyny speech as ‘megals’, and treating female users invisible beings in online communities. Megalians have recognized the mechanism of misogyny apparatus and adopted mirroring speech which imitates misogyny speech patterns. Their mirroring tactic challenges the power relationship embedded in misogyny apparatus and nullifies the activation of misogyny apparatus. Megalians have played recontextualizing misogyny speech and freeing women from the apparatus. Megalians refused the prototype of women that men expects and experienced subjectivation. However, megalians’ speech acts which speak back and speak through excitable speech have limitations in that they may be recaptured by another apparatus to support patriarchy and they may conserve the division between women and men and division between megalians and non-megalians. This study contributes to understanding the potentials and limitations of the controversial anti-misogyny community called Megalia.
