CPTED: 범죄학과 건축학의 통섭적 결합

Abstract

사회문제가 갈수록 복잡·다층화 됨에 따라 학문간 통합에 대한 요구는 커져가고 있으며, 이 러한 측면에서 최근 ‘통섭(consilience)’에 대한 관심이 증폭되고 있다. ‘통섭’ 연구는 기존 학문 의 벽을 무너뜨리고 거대한 하나의 통합 학문의 영역을 개척한다는 점에서 대단히 파격적이고 도전적이 아닐 수 없다. 통섭적 결합이란 이질적인 것들을 단순히 물리적으로 통합하거나, 또는 녹여서 완전히 새로운 하나가 되는 화학적 융합이 아닌 기존의 속성을 담고 있으면서 새로운 주 체를 낳는 과정을 의미한다. 이에 따라 최근 경제학은 물론, 국제정치학 등 사회과학 분야에서 는 사회과학적 접근 방법만으로 해결하지 못한 여러 난제들을 통섭적 접근 방법을 통해 풀고자 하는 움직임이 활발하게 전개되고 있다. 범죄 문제 역시 기존의 범죄학 등 사회과학적 접근 방 법에만 의존해서는 해결의 가능성이 높지 않다는 점에서 통섭적 연구의 필요성이 제기되는 분 야 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 측면에서 이미 오래전부터 통섭적 연구의 가능성을 보여 왔 던 Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design(CPTED)에 대한 관심이 새롭게 부 각되고 있다. CPTED, 이른바 ‘환경설계를 통한 범죄예방’은 사회과학과 공학이라는 비교적 거 리가 먼 것처럼 여겨지는 두 학문 분야가 만나 좀 더 안전한 생활환경을 조성하는 것을 핵심 개 념으로 하고 있다는 점에서 통섭적 결합의 한 형태라고 볼 수 있다. 하지만 CPTED가 단순한 형 태적·물리적 통합의 차원을 넘어서 통섭적 결합이 되기 위해서는 무엇보다도 범죄학과 건축학 의 독자적 영역의 벽을 허물어야만 한다. 공동 연구의 활성화를 통해 상대 영역에 대한 이해를 깊게 하는 한편 서로의 한계를 인식하고 ‘범죄공간학’과 같은 새로운 영역에 대한 이론적 정립을 도모할 때, CPTED가 범죄학과 건축학, 사회과학과 공학의 진정한 통섭적 결합으로 완성될 것으로 기대한다.

As modern society is increasingly becoming more diverse and complex, there has been growing the need for the integration of disciplines, which also brings the interest in ‘consilience.’ The study of consilience seems to be challenging in that it breaks the barrier of established disciplines and creates a new realm of academy. Consilience refers to the process of creating new existence rather than combining heterogeneous material physically or melting into one another chemically. Accordingly some social science disciplines including economics and international politics have attempted to take advantage of the approaches of consilience in order to solve the problems that have troubled the disciplines. Crime appears to be one of the most difficult problems to be solved only by relying upon social science approaches, which also creates the need for the study of consilience. The interest in CPTED, in this sense, has been rekindled for its relevance to consilience. CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) appears to employ the approaches of consilience since its goal is to promote safer space and environment by combining two disciplines, criminology and architecture which seems to be less relevant. The barrier of individual discipline should be pulled down for the consilience of CPTED beyond formal and physical integration. Cooperative researches between criminologists and architects should be invigorated to deepen the understanding of each other, which would contribute to the establishment of a new discipline such as ‘criminal proxemics’ that integrates criminology with architecture.
