- Abstract
- The purpose of this literature review was to analyze research studies regarding Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS) of children with ASD. Keyword searches were used to identify articles from electronic databases between 1990 and 2019. A total of 13 articles met all inclusion criteria and were analyzed based on the purpose of the study, research topics, participants, and research methods. The findings of 13 selected studies were divided into three categories, which were (a) FMS of children with ASD, (b) the skills correlated with FMS of children with ASD, and (c) the interventions to enhance FMS of children with ASD. In summary, children with ASD are considerably delayed in FMS compared to their typically functioning peers. In addition, the lack of FMS limits the class participation of children with ASD in Physical Education (PE) classes. Therefore, the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) models with respect to FMS of children with ASD should be recommended to practical settings. Additionally, more empirically-sound product research should continually be explored.
