20･30대의 SNS 네트워크 이질성과 선택적 노출이 이견관여와 투표의도에 미치는 영향: 정향욕구의 조절적 역할을 중심으로

Abstract

나와 다른 의견에 반응하고 나의 생각을 표현하는 이견관여 행동은 민주적 숙의 과정에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 그럼에도 SNS 이견관여 행동에 영향을 주는 선행요인의 역할과 이견관여 행동의 결과를 종합적으로 탐구한 연구는 많지 않은 것이 현실이다. 본 연구는 미래 우리 사회의 정치 핵심층이 될 20·30대를 대상으로 설문을 진행하여 SNS 네트워크 정치적 이질성, 선택적 노출 그리고 정향욕구가 이견관여에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 살펴봤다. 또한 이견관여가 제20대 대통령 선거의 투표의도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석했다. 연구 결과, 네트워크 이질성과 선택적 노출은 SNS에서의 이견관여 행동에 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 정향욕구는 네트워크 이질성과 이견관여 행동의 관계를 조절하였다. 한편 이견관여는 네트워크 이질성의 영향을 완전 매개하여 투표 의도에 부정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 SNS 네트워크의 정치적 이질성이 이견관여 행동은 증가시키지만 투표 의도는 감소시키는 이중적 역할을 수행하고 있음을 보여준다.

Cross-cutting discussion, which includes responding to disagreeing opinions and expressing their own, plays a significant role in deliberative democracy. Despite its importance, little has been known about predictors of cross-cutting discussion and its effects. Drawing on a survey among the 20s and 30s, this study explores how social network service (SNS) network heterogeneity, selective exposure, and need for orientation might affect the extent of cross-cutting discussion. The effects of cross-cutting discussion on voting intentions in the South Korean presidential election are also analyzed. The results show that network heterogeneity and selective exposure are positive predictors of the level of cross-cutting discussion on SNSs. Need for orientation, a desire to seek helpful information, moderates the relationship between network heterogeneity and cross-cutting discussion. Results suggest that the need for orientation increases the level of voting intentions, while network heterogeneity and cross-cutting discussion attenuate the voting intentions. These results show that the political heterogeneity of the SNS network plays a dual role of increasing cross-cutting discussion but decreasing the voting intention.
