미국 공화당 대통령 수락연설에 나타난 미국 보수주의의 변화 탐색

Abstract

미국 사회의 이념적 양극화 현상에 관한 학문적 관심은 특히 2016년 도널드 트럼프의 공화당 후보 확정 이후 공화당의 정책 방향이 보수주의 성향을 강화할 것인지에 대한 실용적 관심으로 확대되고 있다. 미국 유권자들의 진보-보수 이념 성향이 정당 지지도와 결합하여 지속적으로 재생산되고 있으며 특히 공화당 지지자들의 보수화 성향이 강화되고 있다는 여론조사결과물은 선거를 앞둔 공화당은 지지층의 목소리를 더욱 고려해야 하는 상황에 놓이게 되었다. 이러한 배경을 염두에 두고 본 연구는 1980년 이후 공화당의 대통령 후보들의 수락 연설을분석하여 미국의 보수주의 이념이 대통령 후보의 연설에서 어떠한 범주로 구체화되는지 살펴보았다. 3가지 범주의 보수주의인 사회적 보수주의, 경제 보수주의, 그리고 대외정책 보수주의범주로 분류한 공화당 대통령 후보의 연설은 사회적 보수주의 성향을 가장 강하고 지속적으로보여준 것으로 나타났다. 다음으로 후보들은 연설문에 나타난 경제 보수주의에 대한 정책 제시와 견해를 동시에 피력함으로써 사회적 보수주의와 경제 보수주의의 주요 축으로 미국의 보수주의를 해석하고 있음을 확인하였다.

This research explores the relationship between American Conservatism and statements of political elites, particularly presidential candidates in the U.S. Polarization of political ideology in the United States has been an important academic interest and how to utilize the conservative ideas and values into the policy has been another fact to investigate. The research found the three categories of conservatism in the US(social conservatism, economic conservatism, and conservatism in the foreign policy) consistently represented the presidential candidates position since 1980s. In particular, social conservatism is the most frequently mentioned in the statement followed by the economic conservatism.
