The purpose of this paper is to review physical education as liberal education (PELE) from the perspective of cross-cultural philosophy of play to establish the fundamental value of PELE in universities. Generally, physical education (PE) is grounded in the philosophy and ideology of play. The aim of PE is to aid in the physical, mental, and social development, integration, and adjustment of the individual through guided instruction and participation in sports, rhythmic, and gymnastic activities selected and conducted according to social and hygienic standards. However, the status of PELE in universities has declined. This study offers concrete suggestions: increase specialized courses through convergence curriculum reform (e.g., narrative physical education through sports and storytelling), extend the PELE curriculum (e.g., PE courses, principles of physical fitness), reinforce management and direction, and cooperate with related staff members in universities.-
