드라마 <원녀일기>에 나타난 고전소설 리텔링 방식과 공감과 위안의 서사

Abstract

<원녀일기(怨女日記)>는 고전소설을 소재로 오늘날 미혼 여성의 사랑과 결혼을 다룬 드라마이다. <원녀일기>에서는 콩쥐, 춘향, 심청 등 우리나라를 대표하는 고전소설 속 여주인공들을 한 마을에 사는 노처녀로 설정하여 이야기를 전개한다. 이렇게 고전소설을 리텔링하는 것은 기존의 드라마에서 반복적으로 보여준 노처녀의 사랑과 결혼이라는 상투적인 소재를 새로운 이야기로 만들기 위해서이다. 특히 <원녀일기>는 여러 편의 고전소설을 동일한 시공간을 배경으로 컨버전스(convergence)하여 새로운 이야기로 전환시킨다. 이 드라마가 여러 편의 고전소설을 컨버전스하여 리텔링한 것은 고전소설의 단순한 남녀 관계를 변화시켜 긴장감 있는 삼각관계를 형성하게 하고, 기존의 가치와 규범을 전복하여 오늘날 여성들의 사랑과 결혼에 대한 변화된 가치관을 보여주기 위해서이다. <원녀일기>는 콩쥐, 춘향, 심청의 결핍과 이를 충족시켜 가는 과정에 주목하고 있다. 못생긴 콩쥐, 미혼모의 딸 춘향, 가난한 심청은 오늘날 미혼여성들을 대변한다. 이들은 외모지상주의, 한 부모 가정, 경제적 빈곤 등 현실적 문제로 갈등하고 고민하지만 결국엔 남성(혹은 아버지)에게 의존적이었던 자신을 극복하고 주체적인 삶을 선택하는 여성으로 성장해간다. 그러나 <원녀일기>에 나타나는 주인공의 변화와 성장은 남성중심적 질서를 거부하고 해체하는 방식은 아니다. 주인공들은 남성의 욕망에 부합하는 신데렐라가 되는 것을 거부하지만 신데렐라 자체를 부정하지 않는다. 변화와 성장의 계기가 남성의 선택과 낭만적 사랑이라는 점은 이 드라마가 남성 중심의 헤게모니와 일정 정도 타협하고 있음을 보여주는 것이다. <원녀일기>는 현실의 문제와 이상적 사랑 사이에서 고민하는 현대 여성의 딜레마를 반영하고 있다. 오늘날 여성들은 자신의 주도적 결정으로 사랑을 이루고 싶지만, 현실은 남성 중심적 질서를 인정하고 타협할 수밖에 없다. 따라서 미혼여성이 처한 상황을 공감하고 위로해주는 <원녀일기>와 같은 이야기가 필요하다. 즉, 드라마 <원녀일기>는 현대 여성의 고민과 갈등을 위로해주는 공감과 위안의 서사인 것이다.

The Spinster Diary is a drama depicting love and marriage for today’s single women, based on themes explored in classical novels. In this tale, Kongjui, Chunhyang, and Shimcheong, three women representing the heroines of classical stories, inhabit the “old maid” role in their village. Here, a classical story is retold, creating a new story out of conventional themes frequently reproduced in past dramas-namely, love and marriage. The Spinster Diary, in particular, converts familiar stories into new ones by converging their themes into a single story that unfolds within the same setting. The story converts and retells several classical novel themes to create a love triangle of high tension, altering the simple man-woman relationships prevalent in classical novels. By overturning old values and norms, it shows how the values of today’s women have changed. The Spinster Diary focuses on the process of revealing, and satisfying, its characters’ deficiencies. Chunhyang, the daughter of a single mother, ugly Kongjui, and poor Shimcheong represent today’s single women. Although they experience conflict, and worry over realistic issues such as physical appearance, social status, and economic stability, they eventually overcome their dependencies on men and grow into women leading independent lives. In this drama, however, the main characters’ changes and personal growth do not reject and dismantle the male-centric order. They refuse to be Cinderella to meet men’s standards；they do not deny Cinderella herself. Their growth stems from men’s choices and romantic love, indicating that, to a certain degree, the drama still compromises on the male-dominant hegemony. The Spinster Diary reflects the dilemmas of modern women torn between realistic issues and ideal love. Today’s women want to fulfill their love lives according to their own independent decisions, but reality asks them to recognize and compromise on the male-dominant order. Unmarried women need stories like The Spinster Diary, which sympathizes with them and provides comfort in difficult situations. In this sense, the drama functions as a fantasy to comfort modern women in the midst of their personal struggles.
