- Abstract
- It is a need to introduce a remodeling concept for conducting repairs on aged concrete pavements on a large scale. In this
study, a remodeling index (RMI) model was developed as a tool for evaluating the aged concrete pavement sections of an
expressway. The model determines remodeling urgency and the priority for large-scale repairs of concrete pavements. The
pavement sections used for modeling were selected by classifying them into jointed concrete pavement (JCP) and continuously
reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) to ensure a thorough distribution of types and severity of distress, environmental
factors, and traffic. A panel of pavement experts reviewed a video on pavement conditions and assigned an RMI value for each
section. The RMI model was developed by treating the panel-assigned RMI values for each section as a dependent variable and
by treating the factors relevant to the structural condition of the pavement section as independent variables. The RMI of the
verification sections evaluated by the panel were compared to those predicted by the model to verify its accuracy. The
sensitivity of the dependent variable RMI was analyzed based on each independent variable. In addition, the RMI model was
applied to the entirety of the aged concrete pavement sections of a Korean expressway to analyze remodeling urgency by
route, lane, and pavement type. As a result, the travelling lanes, which are mainly used by heavy vehicles, were shown to have
higher remodeling urgency than the passing lane. JCP showed better aged concrete pavement conditions compared to CRCP.
However, JCP was shown to have faster rate of deterioration than CRCP.
