조병화 시에 나타난 ‘고독’의 문제’에 대하여

Abstract

조병화 시인은 자신의 삶의 목적이 ‘시의 길을 사는 것’이고, 그 시의 목적은 ‘순수고독의 광맥을 캐는 것’이라고 말한다. 그에게 고독은 시인의 삶과 시 혹은 시쓰기를 매개하는 질료인 동시에 그것들의 최종 목적이 되는 것이다. 고독이 시인 자신이 겨냥하는 궁극적인 삶의 목적이라는 사실은 곧 시인으로 하여금 자기 자신의 내면을 돌아보게 한다는 사실과 다른 것이 아니다. 시인이 자신의 내면을 보고 싶어 하는 욕망은 자신만의 존재성을 지니기 위한 시적 전략으로 볼 수 있다. 그의 고독은 이렇게 ‘안으로 안으로’ 향한다는 것은 곧 그의 고독이 분리에서 오는 결핍된 존재가 아니라 내적으로 충만한 존재로 남게 되는 것이다. 시인은 자신의 이러한 고독한 세계를 ‘고요함’으로 명명하고 있다. 이러한 명명은 고독이 지니는 충만함을 고요를 통해서 발견하고 있는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 시인의 고독이 여기에 대해 한 점 의식의 회의도 없이 온전한 충만함으로 끝을 맺고 있는 것은 아니다. 그의 고독의 온전함에 균열을 내고 있는 존재가 있다. 바로 ‘죽음’인 것이다. 죽음에서 오는 불안을 해소하기 위해 많은 사람들이 신을 찾고 그의 힘을 빌려 평정을 유지한다. 조병화 시인에게는 이런 신은 없다. 하지만 그에게는 이런 신을 대체할만한 존재가 있다. 바로 ‘어머니’다. 그에게 어머니는 텅 빈 세계를 채우고 불안을 잠재우는 절대적인 존재이다. 그런데 그 어머니는 이승이 아닌 저승에 있다. 시인은 이 어머니를 수시로 불러내 자신의 결핍을 채우려고 한다. 시인은 죽음의 실체를 온전히 지각할 수도 또 이해할 수도 없기 때문에 여기에서 최선은 어머니를 매개로 하여 죽음의 문제를 끊임없이 자신의 의식 속으로 끌어들여 그것을 지각하고 인지하고 또 이해하고 판단하는 일련의 시적 상상의 과정을 밀고 나가는 일일 것이다. 어머니에 대한 시인의 지극함은 ‘한결 하얗게 비어감’이 말해주듯이 그것은 언제나 죽음 혹은 고독의 정수를 향해 있다. 이것은 그의 시가 겨냥하고 있는 고독의 성격과 함께 그의 시 전반의 존재론적인 의미를 드러낸 것이라고 할 수 있다.

The poet, Jo Byeong―Hwa, says the purpose of his life is to "live in the way of poetry", and the purpose of the poetry is to "dig a lode of pure solitude". His solitude is the material intermediating the poet"s life and poetry or writing poetry. And it is the final purpose at the same time. The ultimate purpose of the life is not different form letting the poet reflect his or her inner world. The desire, that the poet wants to look inside his life, is the poetic strategy to have his own existence. As his solitude is toward his inner mind, is is not the deficiency from separation, but the left as fulfilled. He calls the desolate world silence. It means he can find the solitude fulfilling life through the silence. But his solitude does not end only with entire fulfillment without any doubt. There is something to breaks the complete solitude. It is the death. Many people look for the god and maintain control with the god"s power to resolve anxiety from death. Jo Byeong―Hwa does not have the god. But he has a substitute, the mother. The mother is the absolute being which fulfills the empty world and calms the anxiety. The mother is in the land of the dead, not the living. He manages to fulfill his deficiency, calling his mother out. As he cannot perceive and understand the reality of death, he keeps drawing the issue of death through the mother and makes a series of poetic imagination, perceiving, recognizing, understand and judging. His utmost on the mother is toward the essence of solitude or death, as it is "getting more empty and white". It can be said to reveal the meaning of ontology and the characteristic of solitude targeted in his poetry.
