유니콘 기업의 성장 과정과 성장 요인에 관한 연구:스트라이프와 스퀘어의 사례를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 핀테크 분야의 대표적인 유니콘 기업이었던 스트라이프와 스퀘어의 성장 경로를 분석함으로써 성장 단계의 유형별로 성장에 영향을 주는 요인을 연구한다. 사례 연구를 통해서 스타트업에서 유니콘까지 단계와 유니콘 이후(유니콘에서 비상장기업인 데카콘 또는 주식시장에 상장된 엑시콘까지) 단계에 영향을 준 전략 요인을 구분하여 도출하였다. 그리고 사례 기업의 성장 과정에 영향을 준 환경 요인도 제시하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면 스트라이프와 스퀘어가 스타트업에서 유니콘으로 성장하는 과정에서 단순하고 고객 편의성이 높은 기술·서비스 플랫폼, 파괴적 혁신에 기반한 차별화된 비즈니스모델, 관련 분야의 창업·경영 경험을 가진 기업가와 산업의 이해도가 높은 벤처캐피탈로부터 초기 성장을 위한 투자 유치가 주요한 전략 요인이다. 그리고 유니콘 이후 단계에서 성장하는데 기여한 전략 요인은 여러 기업과 협력을 통한 지속적 성장의 기반 마련, 적극적으로 시장 또는 고객 확대(글로벌 시장 진출 확대 또는 B2B에서 B2C 진출로 고객 확대), 기존 핵심기술과 최신 기술의 융합으로 서비스 분야 확대, 후기 성장 단계에 특화된 투자자로부터 대규모 투자의 유치이다. 이에 추가하여, 신산업의 높은 성장률, 규제 완화, 선진화된 벤처금융 생태계는 스트라이프와 스퀘어의 빠른 성장에 영향을 준 환경 요인으로 나타났다.

This paper aims to investigate determinants affecting growth of unicorns in each type of growth stage by analyzing the growth path of Stripe and Square, representative unicorns in the fintech industry. Through a case study, it separately draws firm-level strategic factors affecting each stage (i.e. startup-to-unicorn stage and post-unicorn stage before a decacorn or a exitcorn). It also suggests environmental factors of firm growth. According to the results of this study, main strategic factors of growth in the startup-to-unicorn stage are simple technology-service platform increasing customer convenience, differentiated business model based on disruptive innovation, and financing initial-stage growth capital from entrepreneurs with related startup experience and venture capitals with a deep understanding of the industry. In addition, main strategic factors in the post-unicorn stage are establishing a basis of persistent growth through partnership with diverse firms, expansion of market or customers through increasing entry into global market or B2C business, expansion of service areas based on the integration of existing core technology and cutting-edge technology, and continuously financing large-scale capital from investors specialized in later-stage growth capital. In addition, high growth rate of the new industry, deregulation, and advanced ecosystem of entrepreneurial finance are environmental factors for fast growth of Stripe and Square. Based on these results of case study, this paper discusses implications of corporate management and public policy.
