- Abstract
Abstract: When conducting a metal fatigue test, micro-cracks are generated initially. These cracks, from a thermodynamic point of view, occur due to an irreversible mechanism and are accompanied by energy dissipation [1]. Since metal dissipates plastic energy with the evolution of damage, the fatigue damage of the 304 austenitic stainless steel was analyzed by using the intrinsic dissipated energy as a parameter. The fatigue damage sensitivity, deviation in the measurement data, and the coefficient of determination of the predicted fatigue limit of STS 304 were analyzed by comparing the surface temperature and intrinsic dissipated energy data that are acquired at each stress amplitude in the fatigue test. The index obtained based on the intrinsic dissipated energy was observed to be more reliable than that based on the surface temperature difference. The behavior of the intrinsic dissipated energy at a load frequency of 5 Hz predicted a reliable fatigue limit, and the predicted value obtained a conservative value, which is about 10% lower than the value obtained by the staircase method.
