dc.description.abstractA practical numerical model based on the dispersion-correction finite difference scheme of Yoon et al. [Terres. Atmos. Oceanic Sci. 18(1), 31-53 (2007)] equipped with the grid nesting scheme of Lim et al. [Natural Hazards 47(1), 95-118 (2008)] is introduced. The model is applied to simulate the propagation of a historical tsunami event that attacked the east coast of Korea. The calculated free surface displacements are compared with the observations at two tidal stations along the east coast of Korea. The comparison shows that the results agree well with the observations. The analyses of the simulated results show that the underwater topography such as submerged rises and ridges plays an important role in the propagation of tsunamis in this region. © 2018 by World Scientific Publishing Co.
