Abstract

Purpose: In the past, modern hospitals emphasized functionality and efficiency with a focus on treatment. However, in modern times, hospitals now view health from physical, mental, and social aspects, emphasizing the treatment and healing of patients. Despite this, the ward departments of Korean general hospitals are still planned with a focus on functionality. Since the ward is a space where patients stay and live for extended periods, the living environment of the patients should be prioritized. Therefore, this study was initiated to infer the reasons for the lack of change and continuity in the ward departments of Korean general hospitals. Methods: A comparative analysis was conducted on the design guidelines issued during design competitions for ten Korean general hospitals. Results: The results of this study can be summarized into two points. Firstly, the area programs presented in the design guidelines mainly describe functional aspects, and there has been little change in the composition of ward department programs over the past 30 years. Secondly, the planning elements required for ward departments in the design guidelines are mostly related to functionality, and there is a lack of consideration for user environments or overall operations. These planning elements have remained unchanged over the past 30 years, particularly in terms of user environments or overall operations. Implications: The content regarding ward departments in the design guidelines of Korean general hospitals has been described primarily in terms of functionality, with no significant changes over the past 30 years. Therefore, consideration of various environments and relationships beyond functionality is necessary.
