디자인 전공 교과목에서의 생성형 AI 도구 활용 사례 연구

Abstract

이 연구는 대학 디자인 교과목에서 생성형 AI 도구 활용 사례를 분석하여 그 교육적 효과를 평가하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 더블 다이아몬드 모델을 활용하여 수도권 대학교 디자인 전공 교과목 수강생이 제출한 창작물 포트폴리오를 활용하여 학습자들이 발견, 정의, 개발, 전달의 디자인 프로세스 각 단계에서 AI 도구를 어떻게 활용하는지를 분석하였다. 창작물 제작을 마친 이후 설문조사를 통하여 학습자들이 AI 도구의 유용성, 지속 사용 의지, 작업 속도 및 품질 향상에 도움을 주는 정도, 작품의 질적 수준을 높이는데 기여하는 정도, 디자이너의 역할에 위협을 주는지 여부에 대하여 어떤 인식을 가지게 되었는지를 조사하였다. 연구 결과, 학습자들은 생성형 AI 도구가 디자인 프로세스 각 단계에서 작업 효율성을 높이고 문제해결 과정을 빠르게 진행하도록 하는데 도움을 주는 것으로 인식하였다. 특히 아이디어 시각화, 다양한 디자인 옵션 탐색, 데이터 분석 과정에서의 유용하다고 인식하였다. 대부분의 학습자가 AI 도구의 활용에 대하여 긍정적으로 평가한 반면, 일부 학습자는 디자이너의 창의성 저하와 AI 의존 가능성에 대한 우려를 나타냈다. 학습 결과 측면에서는 AI 도구 활용이 외국인과 국내 학습자 간 성취 격차를 줄이는 데 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 분석되었다. 이를 바탕으로 이 연구에서는 대학 교육 현장에서 AI 도구의 활용은 학습자의 창의적 사고와 개별 디자인 아이덴티티 구축에 기여할 수 있도록 학습자의 AI 활용 능력을 고려하여 체계적으로 도입되어야 함을 제안하였다. 교수자는 단순하게 수업 현장에서 AI 기술을 적용하도록 하는 것이 아니라 이러한 도구의 활용이 학습자들의 창의적 사고를 촉진할 수 있도록 하는 방안을 지속적으로 탐구해야 한다. 이를 위하여 교수 설계 단계에서부터 AI 도구 활용 시기와 방식을 철저히 계획하고, 다양한 교수법을 활용하는 것이 필요하다.

This study aims to evaluate the pedagogical impact of generative AI tools in a university-level design course. The research was conducted with students in a communication design program at a university. Using the Double Diamond model, the study analyzed how AI tools were used in the four stages of the design process: discovery, definition, development and delivery. In addition, students' perceptions of AI tools were assessed through surveys, focusing on their usefulness, intention to continue using them, impact on workflow speed and quality, and influence on designers' creativity. The results showed that generative AI tools improved efficiency and accelerated problem-solving processes in design activities. They were effective in visualizing ideas, exploring different design options and analyzing data. While most students were positive about AI tools, citing their benefits in streamlining workflows, some raised concerns about potential suppression of creativity and dependency on AI. In addition, the study highlighted that AI tools had a positive impact on reducing the achievement gap between international and domestic students. This study highlights the need for a systematic approach to integrating AI tools into design education that takes into account students' skill levels and fosters their creative thinking and design identity. Beyond the mere technical application of AI, educators should explore methods to stimulate students' creativity and problem-solving skills. This requires careful planning of when and how to introduce AI tools, and the development of diverse teaching strategies to ensure effective and balanced use of AI in education.
