THERMAL PROPERTIES OF ORGANIC-BASED PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS FOR THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE MATERIALS

Abstract

Lauric acid and paraffin have been recommended to be used as phase change materials (PCMs) due to their easy availability of materials in the market. Nevertheless, the direct utilization of both PCMs is not recommended due to their low thermal conductivity and leakage issues. In this study, a simple sol-gel method has been conducted and silicon dioxide (SiO2) has been chosen as the shell material. Core-shell ratio of 1-1 is taken for both PCMs and their synthesized products were analyzed by Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal properties analysis reveal different transition range (melting and solidifying) as well as latent heat capacity. It concludes that both PCMs can be used as potential thermal energy storage materials.
