In a conventional wound rotor synchronous machine (WRSM) there is a problem of slip rings and brushes which connect the machine to excitation circuit. Therefore, the permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) are suitable in many applications. However, a PMSM is not a good option where flexible control and cost-effectiveness is required since the cost of permanent magnet (PM) has increased over time. In order to save the cost, the Conventional WRSM is replaced with brushless WRSM (BLWRSM). In this paper, a comparisonhas been made to analyse the results of both the conventional WRSM and a brushlessWRSM. In a BLWRSM, the rotor field winding is excited from inducing voltage through transformer action and for this, an additional harmonic Magneto Motive Force (MMF) is created in the stator windings. In our recent research, thyristor circuit is used to generate harmonic current in the stator winding so that this current is used to induce voltage on the rotor for excitation.-
