This study examines the operational structures and conditions for the structural sustainability of neighborhood-scalecommunity spaces, focusing on the case of Ansan City, South Korea. While community spaces have proliferated across variousgovernment-led initiatives such as urban regeneration, social economy, and local welfare policies, their long-term viabilityremains limited due to fragmented governance, short-term project orientation, and a lack of systemic integration into broaderlocal policy ecosystems. Applying a framework of four analytical dimensions—institutional foundation, operational model, financial structure, and localgovernance integration—this research analyzes the operational realities of community spaces in Ansan and identifies threedistinct models: the community-driven model aligned with local planning (Sadong), the resident autonomy-based governancereconstruction model (Ansan-dong), and the university-led creative experimentation model (Yesullo). These models demonstratehow different structural configurations influence sustainability outcomes. Findings indicate that sustainable community space operations depend less on individual initiative and more on the degree ofinstitutional embeddedness, resource coordination, and the space’s function as a local governance hub. Ansan’s case, shapedby early institutionalization of neighborhood planning and diverse governance experimentation, suggests a new approach toviewing community spaces not as isolated facilities but as integral components of place-based policy infrastructure. The studyconcludes with policy recommendations to support differentiated support systems and long-term structural integration.-
