Effects of Corrective Feedback on Grammatical Accuracy of EFL Writing

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of written corrective feedback (WCF) on grammatical errors as a method for improving English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing. The research questions we asked were what the most commonly occurring errors are in Korean students’ English writing and whether WCF leads to the improvement of grammatical accuracy. Thirty-one Korean college students participated in an experiment which lasted for 12 weeks from March 30 until June 19 in 2015. In the experiment each participant took two-hour long writing classes and received WCF on grammatical errors in four essays. The results of the study showed that the most common errors were in the use of articles, prepositions, punctuation, verb-formation, and singular for plural, which is consistent with earlier studies (Cha, 1990; Han, 2014). It was found, however, that there was not a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-tests in terms of accuracy, suggesting that WCF is not helpful for improving grammatical accuracy of L2 writing. Informal interviews with seven participants revealed four possible reasons as to the ineffectiveness of WCF as a method of improving EFL writing: ① students’ beliefs that grammatical errors are inherent and consequently inevitable parts of L2 writing; ② instructors’ unclear feedback; ③ habit-formed errors; and ④ intimidating red-pen based corrections. This study examined whether WCF is effective for grammatical accuracy of L2 writing. An empirical study involving 31 Korean college students was carried out to see what the most common error types are and whether teacher WCF leads to grammatical accuracy. Teacher WCF was provided on the five most common errors participants made in their pre-test writing. The results demonstrated, however, that teacher WCF on four essays was not effective to improve participants’ grammatical accuracy.

본 연구는 한국 대학생들의 영작문 실력을 향상시키기 위한 방안으로 문법 오류 수정이 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하였다. 총 31명의 학생들이 12주간의 영작문수업에 참여하여, 영어 에세이 쓰기에 대한 이론 수업과 4번의 실제 쓰기 활동 및 외국인 교수자의 문법 교정이 병행되었다. 먼저, 사전 에세이 테스트의 문법 오류 분석을 통해 학생들이 가장 흔히 범하는 오류를 분류하고, 영작문 수업 참여 후 앞서 분류된 문법오류에 대해 그 정확성이 얼마나 향상 되었는지 통계 분석을 통해 비교하였다. 그 결과, 한국 대학생들의 영작문에서 가장 흔하게 발견되는 문법 오류는 관사, 전치사, 구두점, 동사형태, 단수·복수 오류였고, 이 오류에 대한 4번에 걸친 문법 오류 수정은 영작문 정확성 향상에 도움이 되지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 일곱 명의 참여 학생과의 인터뷰를 통해 이러한 결과에 대한 이유를 다음과 확인하였다. 첫째, 영어를 외국어로 배우는 참여자는 영작문에서의 문법적 오류를 당연한 결과로 받아들였고, 문법적으로 보다 정확한 글을 쓰고자 하는 의지가 부족했다. 둘째, 외국인 교수자의 문법교정이 명확하지 않아 오히려 학생들에게 혼란을 가져왔다. 셋째, 이미 습관으로 굳어진 오류는 학생들이 고치기 매우 힘들어 했다. 마지막으로, 외국인 교수자가 붉은색 펜으로 문법 교정을 해 주었는데, 그 자체가 다시 읽고 싶지 않을 만큼 거슬려 크게 효과가 없었음을 확인할 수 있었다.
