Abstract
The purpose of the study was to explore chairpersons’ thoughts regarding status quo of academic supports, barriers, and improvement suggestions in the collegiate sporting settings. For data collection, heads of athletic department in 5 universities were invited to semi-structured and open-ended interviews. Each interview lasts 60-90 minutes, and the interviews were analyzed using question analysis method. As results, first, there have been several academic supports such as establishment of student-athlete-only department, student-athlete-only lectures, mentor program, special lectures (monthly/during breaks), and strong will of chairperson toward academic support. Second, there have been several barriers against academic supports, such as overflowing of fixed idea that student-athletes do not need to study, missing classes due to tournament participation, time burden of travel from academic site to practice site, and financial limits. Third, as improvement suggestions, they issued setting of ‘tall of the eyes education,’ university presidents’ change of recognition about student-athletes’ academic right, reinforcement of the role of Korea University Sport Federation, cross-social change of recognition regarding the concept of sport, and eradication of the culture that overlooks fabricated grades to student-athletes.
