- Abstract
- Harmonic Excitation is important to avoid the brushes and slip-rings in a wound rotor synchronous machine (WRSM) so that it can be given preference to the permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM). In this paper, thyristor circuit is used to generate harmonic current in the stator winding so that this current can be used to induce voltage on the rotor for excitation of the machine. In this method, the slip rings and brushes from the RotorExcitation winding Field winding a rotor can be removed. Which, in turn, solves the problem of losses and maintenance in the wound rotor synchronous machine. The air gap flux comprises two main components i. e. main-field component and the third harmonic component. The main component linking the field winding is responsible for developing torque of the machine. The third harmonic component is responsible for the excitation of the rotor winding. The excitation winding on the rotor is connected through a rectifier, fitted onto the rotor, to the field winding. This paper presents the working principle of the proposed idea and the simulation results in MATLAB and Ansys Maxwell.
