오대산 적멸보궁 입지의 풍수환경과 해석

Abstract

본 연구는 오대산 적멸보궁 입지의 풍수적 특징을 문헌자료와 현장조사를 통해 형세적 관점과 이기론적 관점에서 분석한 연구이다. 풍수가 갖는 특징은 자연과의 조화를 통한 합리적인 입지선정을 목표로 하는데, 신라의 입당승들은 형세풍수의 발상지라 하는 강서지역의 유학을 통해 우리나라 사찰입지의 전형을 완성해 갔다. 특히, 부처님의 진신사리를 모신 적멸보궁은 그 의미가 클 수밖에 없었고, 부처님을 직접 모실 수 없는 상황에서 진신사리를 통한 불교적 완성을 이루고자하는 바람의 실천이었다. 따라서 오대산 적멸보궁 입지에는 다양한 풍수적 특징이 반영되었는데, 특히 오대산 적멸보궁의 입지는 풍수가 갖는 의미있는 특징을 합리적으로 활용하여 불교의 가장 신성한 의미를 갖는 부처님의 진신사리를 봉안하였다. 이러한 상징적 의미를 불교적 교리와 사상을 전파하는 목적으로 활용하는 슬기로운 모습을 연출하였다.

This study is to analyze features of Feng shui at the location of Odaesan Shrine for Sakyamuni Buddha`s Sarira in the way of literature review and field survey with the view of Lichi Theory and the Theory of Topographic Situation. The purpose of Feng shui is to select an ideal place through agreement with nature. And Buddhist monks of Silla who entered Tang Dynasty got the origin of thinking on location selection of Korean temple and made it be consummated, as they went to study abroad to the western area of Chinese continent which had been know as the birthplace of the theory of topographic situation in Feng shui. Especially, Shrine for Sakyamuni Buddha`s Sarira has great meaningfulness because it was a realistic practice to achieve the hope to complete Buddhism in an unable situation of directly enshrining Sakyamuni Buddha. Thus, in the location of Odaesan Shrine for Sakyamuni Buddha`s Sarira, several features of Feng shui were reflected. By enshrining Shakyamuni Sarira that was the most divine thing in Buddhism, the features of Feng shui were rationally utilized. This was a sensible work to disseminate Buddhist doctrine and thought.
