- Abstract
- The present study aims to describe the characteristics of syntax and disfluencies in the precess of normal language development. 61 children at 3∼5 years of age participated in a sentence repetition task in which stimuli were divided into three levels of syntactic complexity. The percentage of correct sentences, syntactic error types, the frequency of disfluencies and disfluency types were analyzed. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the frequency of disfluencies was more related to the syntactic complexity than to the children’s age, whereas the syntactic error occurrence was more related to the age of children than to the syntactic complexity. Second, syntactic errors appeared more frequently in embedded sentences than in main sentences. Third, revision and interjection increased with age while other disfluency types decreased gradually. These results provide evidence that both sentence accuracy and disfluencies are critical at the language assessment. In addition, not only the frequency but detailed types of disfluencies should be considered as well.
