Abstract
This study is an exploration of a dancer’s embodied cognition and the extended mind. It is based on embodied cognitive science and human experience that knowing is through integrated body and mind. It also assumes that embodied knowledge can make compact networks with the environment to affect the world and are affected by the world. Dance relies on capability of execution to adapt the given environment smoothly as well as dancer’s accumulated long term experience through the movement technique, which interacts with continuously emerged particular conditions of unspecific background, because it acquires mainly constantly controled dancer’s movement. Moreover, as a dancer, there is a special state that can not be described or defined with words and it is argued that this inner emotion contains more than just outer movements of the dancer. This study interrogates what is integration of body and mind, and how the dancer knows the feeling of integration, and how the integration emerges and develops to demonstrate dancer’s embodied cognition. Therefore, the aim of this study is to establish relation with dancer's body and cognition by analysing how dancer feels the emotion through the dancer's body and how dancer's inner cognition process derelops. This study considers thatFirstly, human cognition realises and adapts and being engraved the world through their body and it discusses embodied cognition through integration of brain, body and environment. Secondly, it analyses the notion of bodily sense and action affects the mind cognitive function in depth. Therefore, it demonstrates Norris’ notion of emotion, which links between body and mind, and feeling, which transforms acquired knowledge into understanding through Damasio’s neurological approach to explore the developmental stage of emotion. Finally, it explores a dancer’s inner experience through Norris’ notion of developmental stage to get an insight of the dancer’s inner cognition.
