dc.description.abstract | Supporting the idea of ‘freedom of expression’ which is prevalent in modern art, many artists attempt to explore the potential of mixed-media art that combines various materials. Since jewelry is often worn to represent the identity of the wearer, its design and composing material are recognized as important factors. This preliminary study introduces some artists who use textile to experiment with their mixed-media jewelry.Kodesh series, Kim Kyong sun’s fabric Jewelry, is made of brightly colored satin-cotton. Rings of this series, due to the nature of the material, are soft and malleable and they satisfy any wearer’s taste in fashion.Julia de Ville employs various materials for her “mourning jewelry” that range from black jade and human hair to taxidermied animal to represent the Memento Mori. Marianne Gassier combines a wide variety of materials and establishes a distinctive identity of her mixed-media jewelry. Kerstin Klix’s unique jewelry, made of vibrant pastel nylons and knit fabric, also employs a variety of techniques as embroidery, knitting, and wool crochet which is reminiscent of traditional handicrafts. A range of materials used in mixed-media jewelry offersa great source of inspiration and helps many jewelry artists to develop a unique concept in their projects.
