Matrix converter is a direct AC-AC converter which can convert AC power supply of a fixed voltage into an AC voltage of variable frequency and magnitude. It has a simple structure with several advantages over conventional converters. This paper proposes a novel SCR-IGBT based dual bridge matrix converter topology with reduced number of switches using a simple commutation technique. Firstly, performance wise this novel topology has similar characteristics in terms of unity input power factor, voltage transfer ratio, no DC-link capacitor, and high quality voltage-current waveform. Secondly, a major reduction in number of expensive power switch count compare to the conventional and previous dual bridge matrix converter topologies thus reducing the cost. Finally, proposed converter can be utilized with conventional PWM on both line and load side commutation, which results simplification of the control complexity. Theoretical analysis and simulation results are provided to verify its performance.-
